For my daughters: envisioning a world of equality

As we celebrate International Women's Day 2025 with the theme "March Forward," I find myself reflecting on what this means for my two daughters and the future I envision for them.

The call to "March Forward" resonates with me as a mother. It's not just a reminder of the progress we've made, but a powerful call to action for the steps we must all take to create a truly equal world for women. I want my girls to grow up in a society where their gender is never a limitation, but a source of strength and pride. Thankfully, being a woman has never been a limitation for me.

I hope for a world where my girls can:

  • Pursue any career they desire without facing gender-based discrimination or bias

  • Feel safe and respected in all spaces, both public and private

  • Have their voices heard and valued in decision-making processes

  • Achieve equal pay and opportunities for advancement in their chosen fields

  • Balance their personal and professional lives without societal judgment

Understanding that change starts at home, in the workplace and in our broader communities, here are three ways marketing can be incorporated within your company for International Women's Day tomorrow:

1. Feature women in leadership: Showcase the female leaders in your company through an internal communication campaign and social media. Create videos or blog posts highlighting their career journeys, achievements, and advice for aspiring professionals. This not only celebrates your female leaders but also inspires other employees and demonstrates your commitment to gender equality in the workplace.

2. Launch an internal campaign: Develop an initiative that encourages all employees to participate in celebrating International Women's Day. Ideas include:

  • A company-wide photo campaign where employees share images of women who inspire them.

  • A virtual panel discussion featuring female leaders from different departments.

  • An internal competition for employees to submit ideas on improving gender equality in the workplace.

  • Host an external guest speaker for a lunchtime session that exemplifies the theme 'March Forward’.

3. Partner with a female focused charity: Collaborate with an organisation focusing on empowering women, such as ReLove, which supports individuals in crisis with essential home furnishings. Organise volunteer opportunities for employees, collect donations, or provide in-kind contributions. These activities enhance employee engagement and demonstrate your company's commitment to social responsibility. Here's a blog I wrote about ReLove.

As I look at my daughters, I see the potential for a brighter, more equitable future. But I also recognise the responsibility we all share in making that future a reality. It's up to us parents, educators, leaders and citizens to take those bold steps forward and to turn our commitments into tangible change.
